The word “gospel” means good news. And this particular good news is the message that the second Person of the Trinity, God the Son, came to earth as a human being, lived a perfect and sinless life, was crucified and raised to life again after three days. This selfless act on His part allows our sins to be forgiven so we can spend eternity with Christ in heaven.
What I have shown below is a particular presentation of the gospel known as the “Roman Road to Salvation” because all of these passages are taken from the book of Romans which was written by the Apostle Paul.
Although there is only one gospel, there are many ways to present it. Learn these few verses from the book of Romans so you will be able to share it with others. Maybe by sharing the gospel, you will help put someone on the road to heaven.
Romans 10:17 = “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”
How will your loved ones and neighbors hear the good news unless someone tells them? Maybe God is calling you to share His gospel with others.
Romans 7:7 = “I would not have come to know sin except through the Law.”
This is God’s moral law: it is what we know as the Ten Commandments. Have you ever taken something that did not belong to you, even something as seemingly insignificant as a pen from the office? Have you ever used God’s name in a careless manner? Or have you ever said something that wasn’t true, even the tiniest white lie? If so, then God sees you as a thief, a blasphemer and a liar, and these things will keep you from entering heaven.
Romans 3:23 = “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Sin is anything that is contrary to the character of God. God is righteous and holy. Through the free will God had given them, Adam and Eve chose to be disobedient and as a result, died spiritually and received a sinful nature. This sinful nature is an inherited trait and every human being ever born has been born with a sinful nature. If a person does not believe he has sinned, it is simply because he does not know God or His perfect character. We are all sinners.
Romans 6:23 = “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The only way to achieve fellowship with God is for our sins to be forgiven, and the only way for our sins to be forgiven is through the shedding of blood. On his own, man is incapable of removing sin from his life. Only God can forgive sin, and God will forgive sin only through the shedding of the blood of a perfect sacrifice. But what is the perfect sacrifice? It is the life of a perfect and sinless human being. But all humans are born with a sinful nature and are incapable of perfection and sinlessness.
Romans 5:8 = “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Being the second person of the Trinity, Jesus is God and God is sinless. In order to bring sinlessness to humanity, God the Son became fully human while still remaining fully God. He was born into a poor Jewish family and lived a perfect sinless life, qualifying Himself to be the perfect sacrifice to remove human sin. Jesus was crucified, buried and raised again to life on the third day.
Romans 10:9 = “…if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.”
In order to be saved, you must truly believe that Jesus was raised from the dead and is alive today in heaven. We can be confident that the same power which raised Jesus will raise us as well.
Romans 10:13 = “…for whoever will call upon the name of the LORD will be saved.”
We must decide to turn away from our sins and turn toward Christ. This action of turning away from one thing and turning toward another is called repentance; it goes hand-in-hand with placing our faith in Christ and it is required for salvation.
Through His grace, God opens our eyes and changes our hearts. We begin to see our sin the way God sees our sin and we finally understand our need for a Savior. We recognize our hopeless situation and acknowledge that we are powerless against the mastery of sin in our lives.
We must make the conscious and deliberate decision to trust what the Bible says about who Jesus Christ is and what He has made available to us. This is the decision to turn away from sin and turn toward Christ. This decision must be unshakable.
When we come to Christ for salvation, He sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we have the strength to turn away from our sins and live the kind of life God wants to us live.
